How To Celebrate Nature
All over the internet there are thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of blogs and lists explaining how to help protect the great outdoors and the nature around it. We have decided to put a slightly different lens on and see if there are ways that we can celebrate nature while protecting it.
This week’s theme is nature and the great outdoors, we have explored 5 reasons to get outside more and over on Instagram we are sharing some of your photos of your experiences in the great outdoors. The world is beautiful place, there is a lot to celebrate. Sometimes we have to remind ourselves to see the positive in the world. It is true, there is a lot of be concerned about, from the climate crisis to the poaching crisis and beyond, but perhaps, if we take a minute to remind ourselves of the wonder in the world, that there are things to celebrate we can use that positivity to power us in move towards making the world a better place.
So, let’s explore ways we can celebrate nature and the great outdoors.
EXPLORE!
Surely the most impactful way to celebrate the great outdoors is to explore. Whether you head out for a walk in your local park or go on an epic overland adventure, the best way to celebrate nature is to integrate yourself into it.
Exploring doesn’t always mean going to a faraway place. Exploring and adventure, at their core, are mindsets. You can find adventure and something new to explore in places you’ve visited a thousand times before.
It was the Dalai Lama who said ‘Once a year, go someplace you’ve never been before’ - so, where will you go for the first time in 2022?
For the MoveMe team we have heard about a hiking trail that is abut 15km away from MoveMe HQ here in South Africa. That’s our starting point for exploring and celebrating the great outdoors this year. We will share photos when we go!
Volunteer
In cities, towns and the most rural villages around the world there are volunteer groups who are doing essential work to protect our wild and natural spaces. They are often having heaps of fun doing it too.
Volunteering is not only a beautiful way to connect to your local landscape and play your part in protecting and celebrating it, but it is also a great way to build community.
You could help steward your local park run, join a community litter pick, plant trees with a nearby reforestation project. There are community gardens, animal sanctuaries, parkland community groups and so much more.
Volunteering with and for nature is a beautiful way to celebrate the great outdoors, spend more time in community and play and active role in keeping your shared natural spaces as wild as can be.
Make Earth-Inspired Choices
From bringing your own canvas bag to the supermarket to switching to a renewable energy supplier, another way to show our love and reverence for nature is to make earth-inspired choices.
Everything we do creates a ripple effect out into the world and it is our choice to make sure that ripple has a much of a positive impact as possible.
Whether you chose to eat local, reduce your meat consumption, travel on public transport or stop buying fast fashion, celebrating nature and the great outdoors can come in small and big gestures. The small daily acts of love and respect for the earth, when stacked together, can make a monumental difference in the long run.
Campaign & Petition
There is an activist in all of us. Campaigning and petitioning, or supporting those who are running campaigns for change is a really impactful way to be a champion for nature.
All around the world governments and corporations are making poor choices that will impact all of us negatively. From offshore oil drilling, to deforesting huge landscapes to make way for monoculture crops, there is a lot of work to be done to preserve our natural spaces.
What a beautiful way to celebrate and love the earth than to be an earth defender. There are many different groups online who are campaigning for change, signing petitions, sharing posts and educating ourselves about what is happening around the world is an act of service to mother earth.
Get Creative
How do you want to show the world, nature, your community that you love them? How would you like to celebrate nature and the great outdoors.
For some people celebrating nature looks like exploring, for others it looks like campaigning for its protection, for others it looks the like small choices we make everyday.
Ultimately, celebrating earth, nature and the great outdoors is a deeply personal endeavour. Perhaps you are an artist who feels that painting, sketching or drawing is your personal form of celebration. Or perhaps you’re a poet whose words are your language of love and celebration.
For other people celebrating the nature maybe more physical, like planting trees, regenerating soil or caring for injured wildlife.
