3 Reasons Why We All Need Community

Here at MoveMe we are all about building community, working in community and surrounding ourselves, in our work and personal lives, with kind people who inspire us; people we can be in community with.

Our theme for this week is The Power Of Community. We have seen the incredible difference that can be made by a small group of people coming together around a common cause, goal or interest. When it comes to community, it really is a case of ‘the more the merrier’.

Whether you consider your community to be the people who live close to you, the people you work with, people you share a hobby with or even the people you share online spaces with, when we come together in community we can make things move!

We wanted to explore the reasons why we all need community, so we did a little research and are reporting back to you, our MoveMe community on what we have found.

So, let’s get moving!

Here are MoveMe Studio’s 3 Reasons Why We All Need Community.

Community Makes Life Fun

This may seem like the most obvious thing in the world, but...let’s talk about it! Being in community makes life more fun. While there are certainly times in all our lives where we need to be alone, to engage in some healthy introspection, overall life is more fun when we share moments with people that we love and care about.

The beauty of true community is that the people you are surrounded by share common goals, values and beliefs. Shared goals, values, beliefs created the foundation for solid partnerships and friendships.

Whatever it is in life that you find fun, playing computer games, cooking, hiking, playing music, reading, gardening, there is a whole community of likeminded people out there ready to embrace you, have fun and explore what is possible.

We hope you have already found a community of people who you can have fun with. If you are looking to build a new community for yourself, scroll to the end of the blog for our action steps!

Community Is Good for Our Mental Health

Human beings are social beings. We are biologically hardwired to live in community. We need other people in our lives to help us feel happy, to help us feel safe and to help us keep our mental health in a good place.

Studies, and our own experiences, have shown that socialisation decreases feelings of depression and loneliness. Being social increases our brain health, having conversations stimulates our brains into action which boosts our overall cognitive function.

In short...it could be argued...that being in community helps makes you smarter!

Community Makes Life Move Forward

As we have discussed, humans are sociable creatures. We are also deeply creative and coming together in a community setting is a way to set our creativity alight.

Working in community inherently brings new ideas to the forefront of our minds. Many minds are better than one after all. Community spaces are also a great space to explore and discuss ideas that you have generated on your own. You are surrounded by people who understand the context of your ideas, who can make credible suggestions and give you all important feedback.

Ultimately, in community we are supported and uplifted. This is what we need to bring ideas to life. Your community are your collaborators in waiting.

Do You Feel Compelled to Take Action?

Here are some journal prompts, like a mini self audit. You can just read them and have a think, or you can grab yourself a notebook or open your notes app and write your thoughts down.

  • What communities are you a part of?

  • What is your definition of community?

  • Do you think you have enough community-orientated time in your average week?

  • Are there areas of your life that are taking away from your time in community? How can you create more balance?

  • If you could join a new community, what type of community would it be? Where might you find them?

Are you feeling like you need to find a new community, or expand your existing one. Read our guide to building yourself a community.
